In our house we love French Onion Soup. It’s really so good. All onion-y, and broth-y and cheese-y and crusty bread-y…Mmm, mmm good! Yes, my kids love it too…they eat onions raw! Weird children o’mine.
I love ordering it in restaurants, it’s always the fancy soup on the menu. I always feel so grown up eating it (oh wait, I am a grown-up?) okay, then I feel like I’m a grown-up who should be eating it while sitting in a schmancy pants restaurant that is all quite and calm except for the noise of silverware clinking against pricey china. Yeah, that sounds nice. You know, instead of the loud craziness we bring with us when we dine at our 4 star restaurant of choice these days, Noodles and Co. Ahhh, some day 🙂
So what’s better than ordering it in a restaurant one might ask? Well, making it in your crockpot of course! Everything is more fun to eat if it cooks up in your crockpot…well, that’s my motto anyways 😉
Crockpot French Onion Soup
Recipe type: Soup
- 3 onions, sliced
- 3 Tbsp butter
- 3 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp pepper
- 2 32-oz cartons of beef broth
- French bread, sliced on the bias
- swiss or gruyere cheese
- With your crockpot on high, add the butter and let melt.
- Once butter is melted, add in sliced onions and cover.
- Cook onions on high for about 45 minutes to 1 hour or until onions are carmelized.
- Mix together flour, worcestershire sauce, sugar and pepper in another bowl.
- Slowly add flour mixture and broth to onion stirring well.
- Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4.
- To make the crusty bread, slice french bread on the bias and place slices of swiss or gruyere cheese on top.
- Toast in oven at 250 degrees for 20 minutes.
- Pour soup into bowls and top with cheesy bread slices.
First up, grab 3 medium-sized onions…
Slice them nice and thin…
Then take 3 tablespoons of butter…
Melt the butter in your crockpot on high…
Then add your onions, cover and cook for 45 min to 1 hour until your onions are carmelized.
Carmelized onions will look like this…nice and brown and tender.
They will be translucent and you may even see them burnt on the ends. This is all good carmelization! You want this…it gives the soup it’s flavor…sooooo good.
Next grab your flour…
Worcestershire sauce, pepper and sugar and mix together.
Then, open up your cartons of beef broth…
Add the flour mixture and pour in the beef broth while mixing together nice and slowly.
Let cook covered for 6-8 hours on low or 3-4 hours on high.
While you’re waiting, slice your bread. Add your cheese and toast in your oven at 250 degrees for about 20 minutes…or until cheese is all melt-y.
When the soup is ready, pout into serving bowls and top with that awesome cheese bread.
