A Bushel and a Peck and a Hug Around the Neck

| Filed Under: Adventures with Kids

One of our most favorite things to do in the Fall is go apple picking, I just love walking the grounds in a vest or a hoodie and taking in the chill autumn air.  We are lucky that right outside of Chicago we aren’t lacking in apple orchards to visit.  So much so that we pretty much visit at least one every weekend.  Yeah, we like our apples 🙂
What’s my favorite type of apple?  I haven’t a clue.  It seems that each time a take a bite of an apple I find it’s my most favorite one yet…until I try the next variety…apple picking can be so hard.
My favorite type of orchards are the straight up apple orchards, no fuss no muss, just apples.   We visited one this weekend…check out those trees!  I love the overgrown look with apples hanging off branches almost touching the ground.
It rained a couple of hours before we arrived, perfect timing.
We had no shortage of little helpers to twist and pull the apples off of the trees.

They always seemed to pick apples that were sized according to their body’s height…small, medium, and large.
Sometimes they needed a boost from dad to get the ones that their eyes spotted from afar…from the very tippy-top of the tree.
Thanks dad!

Sometimes they just needed to plop down and perform a taste test.

Lots of walking was done…and some hand-holding too 🙂

And after all that hard work these kids needed a break!

And a snack!

Eloise had a great time being in charge of quality control.

Yup, these ones are good folks!

We better figure out where we are going next weekend, I think she wants to do this again (and again!)
Hope you all had a great weekend too.

XOXO,

LOVE the pictures and have been plotting to find a great apple picking spot here. I have to say honeycrisp apples are one of my favorites. We’ve got a little honeycrisp tree in our backyard and hopefully it’ll produce little apples next year or the year after. Jazz and Pacific Rose apples are also yummy. My friend’s parents have the best Fuji apple trees. Oh and Granny Smiths can’t be beat for tartness. 🙂

Lovely! There is a community orchard in our town, and I was practically squealing with joy when I found out about it. The apple trees are 70-odd years old (planted back in WWII era) and the entire orchard feels like an oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life. I love it there.

What a wonderful way to spend time together as a family. I wish we had apple orchards around here. We love picking fruit. Normally we pick strawberries, blueberries and peaches. This year we didn’t make it to the blueberries. Last year we finally found a pumpkin patch nearby where you can pick your own pumpkins. I can hardly wait to take the kids again this year. U-pick farms are way more fun than the grocery store!
