With Noah being 3 going on 30…err 4, he loves his questions. All. Day. Long. From the minute he wakes up until his head hits his pillow at night, he is non-stop with the ‘whys’. The other day he wanted to know ‘why kids’ can swallow their toothpaste but adults spit theirs out?’ and ‘where does everything go when you flush the toilet?’ Right before I had Eloise he was constantly trying to figure out how the baby was going to get out of me. ‘It couldn’t be my belly button,’ he said ’cause it’s closed up.’ He figured it had to travel from my belly to somewhere and came up with the idea that the baby must go down my leg and out my foot although he still wasn’t 100% happy with this as he knows there is no hole in my foot.
In always trying to stay one step ahead of my little interrogator, I wanted to make Noah (and Penny too) a fun treat that would help explain why we celebrate Thanksgiving as it’s only a few weeks away. So I made some of these:
{Little Chocolate-y Pilgrim Hats}
They are super easy to make and as Noah told me, ‘Mom, these are really fun to eat!’ They enjoyed learning about the Pilgrims and the Mayflower and why we celebrate Thanksgiving with a big meal surrounded by the ones we love.
Wanna make a few for your little ones too?
Chocolate Pilgrim Hats
Recipe Type: Dessert
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Ingredients
- 1 package Fudge Stripe cookies
- 1 package marshmallow
- 1 package chocolate almond bark
- yellow icing or yellow jimmys
Instructions
- Lay the Fudge Stripe Cookies with the chocolate side facing up.
- Melt the chocolate bark in a microwave-safe bowl according to package directions.
- Dip marshmallows into melted chocolate making sure to evenly coat.
- Place one dipped marshmallow per cookie and let dry.
- Add yellow icing or jimmies to decorate buckle like a pilgrim hat.
Is your ingredient list complete? Okay, let’s get started!!
First, lay your cookies with the chocolate side up on a piece of waxed paper or parchment paper…
Separate your marshmallows if they are stuck together like mine always seem to be…
Place your chocolate bark in a microwave-safe bowl and melt following the package directions. Mine said to microwave for 1 minute, stir and then microwave again in 30 second intervals until nice and melt-y.
**I also like to add about a tablespoon of shortening to the chocolate bark to make it extra melt-y!
Grab a marshmallow…
And dunk it into your melted chocolate…
Keep turning that baby until it’s completely coated…ummm, yeah that looks good!
Tap the excess chocolate off on the side of your bowl…
And lay your dipped marshmallow on top of your cookie.
Repeat, repeat, repeat…
Make sure you let the chocolate harden for a few minutes…
And then grab your icing (or if you’re using jimmys add them before the chocolate hardens!) and draw little belt buckles on your hats…
Let those belt buckles dry a bit too…
And now you have the perfect prop to tell your little ones about Thanksgiving!
Have fun
and
Have a Happy Wednesday!!!

I LOVE this! We’re gearing up for a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving with my boys and their cousins next week (eating food that Snoopy served in the movie). But I wanna make these to go with it, now!
Also, if you don’t know about “The Light and the Glory”, you should check it out. Real history of our nation’s beginnings. I blogged about it last year: http://roofwithaview.blogspot.com/2009/11/train-up-tuesday-teaching-truth-behind.html

I had a friend who had a son with all the “whys”. One day she was tired and said, “Rogers, quit saying ‘why’ so much.” His answer, “Well, why is there a why then.”
