Today I’m excited to share with you a fun and seriously eye-catching Mother’s Day gift idea that you can make in no time to surprise a momma you know and love dearly! I mean what momma wouldn’t love a beautiful layered frame of her adorable children or grandkids? These would look great hanging on a wall of even leaning on the mantle over the fireplace too!
Earlier this month Joann’s Stores, Inc. and Plaid Enterprises, Inc. sent me a whole bunch of goodies from Martha Stewart’s new line of Craft and Paint supplies…oh my heck was the box big and stuffed! It was like Christmas morning over at the Smashed Peas house the day the mailman delivered it 🙂
I immediately fell in love with all the painting supplies…the colors and the various finishes about put me over the edge. There are five finishes in all: Satin, High Gloss, Pearl, Glitter, and Metallic. And all of Martha’s paints are premium acrylic craft paint that are specially formulated to use on ALL surfaces too…including glass! They are also UV- and weather-resistant for indoor and outdoor use and self-priming for use on porous and non-porous surfaces. Sounds awesome, right!? Well, let me show you just how I made these cute Easy Layered Wooden Frames!
Easy Layered Wooden Frames
Unfinished wood plaques and frames (found at Joann Fabric and Craft Stores)
Martha Stewart Crafts acrylic paints in colors of your choice
Martha Stewart Crafts Basic Brush Set
E-600 or similar type adhesive
or
Restickable adhesive tabs
For the Easy Layered Wooden Frames I used various paint colors in the High Gloss, Satin and Glitter finishes…there are seriously so many colors to choose from it was hard to pick my color combinations! I also used Martha Stewart’s Basic Brush set to paint the frames, these brushes are just so lovely and sturdy that they made painting a breeze.
I painted the unfinished wooden plaque part of the frame (the bottom base of the layered frame) one color using two coats of either satin or high gloss finish acrylic paint. I really loved the glitter paint colors and wanted to use them on the funky frame that lays on top but the glitter is actually more of a tinted clear paint, kinda like glitter nail polish is, so I decided to paint that frame in one coat of either high gloss or satin and then one coat of glitter on top of that. I think it gave the frames a very cool glittery effect!
Once the frames were dry, which takes about 1 hour between coats and about 24 hours to completely set, I placed a picture inside the funky frame and used E-6000 to glue the frames to each other. If you are keeping the frame for yourself as a Mother’s Day gift (hey, who would blame you!) you may want to use pretty strong restickable adhesive tabs along the back corners so that the frames don’t fall apart if they are hung. This way you can will be able to change out the picture if you so desire.
And there you have it! Simply stunning layered picture frames that give a great 3D and textured look 🙂
You can mix and match all day long as there are so many unfinished wood plaque and frame options as well as Martha Stewart Craft paint colors to make your wall art stand out from the crowd!
You can find all of the products (and project ideas) at Joanns.com now and in your local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores as well as Michaels Stores starting today, Monday, April 23, 20121!
Thank you to Plaid Crafts, Joann Fabric and Craft Stores, and Martha Stewart Crafts for sending me such lovely supplies to work with, it was so much fun!
Happy Mother’s Day Crafting and thanks or stopping by today!

I went to JoAnn’s and Michael’s today and could not find the frames at either store! Maybe the ones in my area just don’t have them yet? I am trying to find them on joann.com but am having trouble. Do you know where they are? -Sara
Maggie says
At my Joann’s, if you go to the wood crafts aisle (unfinished wood boxes, stools, coat hook thingies) the frames and plaques are actually perpendicular to that aisle against the outer wall of the store…kind of by the adhesive glue/spray section. Maybe ask an employee cause they may have them located in two different places like mine does!

Hmmmm…I found the unfinished frames at JoAnn’s but they only had square and rectangle plain ones. I did ask someone at Michale’s and she said they don’t have them (I showed her a picture). Can’t find them online either! I want to make them as Mother’s Day gifts =)
Maggie says
Oh that stinks!! Maybe you could google around for some frames similar to these, so sorry!

Well bummer! Went to my local JoAnn’s again and they said they are not one of the “big” stores so they don’t carry the frames and apparently joann.com doesn’t have them yet either. -Sara
Maggie says
Oh I am so sorry to hear this!
Katie says
I love your project and the funky shaped frames!

Thank you so much Katie!
