This Gnome Felt Finger Puppet Tutorial, inspired by Sherlock Gnomes in theaters March 23, is a super cute craft to do with your kids that promotes imagination and play for all ages.
I am so excited to share this fun craft with you today. My kids and I had an absolute blast creating them and they have been played with more times than I can even count at this point! Ever since my kids were itty bitties I have had a thing for felt crafts and within that genre I have always loved playing with felt finger puppets. I love that something as simple as a finger puppet can make a child smile. And I love that they are the type of toys that hardly take up any space at all and that they travel well (even to restaurants!) To me, they are the perfect toy for imaginative play.
But first, can I tell you how excited my entire family is the Sherlock Gnomes is coming to theaters on March 23! We have loved the movie Gnomeo & Juliet that came out a few years back and are thrilled to see that a new one is on it’s way…bring on the popcorn and raisinets!!!
The family friendly movie is a fun adventure about a slew of garden gnome disappearances in London, Gnomeo & Juliet look to legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to solve the case of their missing friends and family. Sherlock Gnomes shares the value of teamwork and putting family first along with not taking others for granted. Mark your calendars!

I was inspired to create these Gnome Felt Finger Puppets after we received these tiny Sherlock Gnomes character toys in the mail. I thought it would be fun to make a finger puppet on behalf of each of these characters!
The thing I love about working with felt is that you can just as easily make anything out of it by sewing it together or you could make it no-sew. Felt is great in that it glues together really easily. For our felt finger puppets, I sewed just the outside of the body and each hat. My kids and I glued everything else together which made it a fun project we could all participate in, even my kindergartener!
Gnome Felt Finger Puppet Tutorial
For this project you will need:
- Felt (I used all the colors you see above but feel free to pick and choose color that work for you!)
- Gnome Template PDFs: Gnome Felt Finger Puppet Templates-1 Gnome Felt Finger Puppet Templates-2
- Tacky Glue or Felt Glue (if you don’t want to sew)
- Needle and coordinating thread (if you do want to sew)
- Scissors
- Sharpie marker
Once you print out and cut apart your Gnome templates, you can start putting them together with glue or by sewing.
To make Juliet:
Glue together her shirt pieces (the white and black seen above) and then glue the shirt piece onto her red dress near the top of the body piece. 2. Next, using a running stitch, I stitched all the way around the body minus the bottom (remember, you need to place your finger there!) If you don’t want to sew, you can glue around the body piece edges and press them together. I also stitched along the outer edge of the hat pieces leaving the bottom open as well so the head could fit inside it.3. Next, put the head together by gluing the nose and hair onto the one face piece. Then opening up the hat, slide the head into it and glue it into place.
4. Next, glue the head onto the body. And then finally draw eyes onto Juliet using the Sharpie marker. I chose to make “happy sleepy” eyes on our finger puppets because it just screams sweet little finger puppet toys to me but you can totally make the eyes any way you want, including using a simple stitch!
Make sure to let the glue dry for an hour or so before you start playing with your finger puppet!
Awww!!! Look, Juliet and Juliet! And how about a peek at Gnomeo and Gnomeo? What a fun little cast of characters!!!
