Little Girl’s Pretend Make Up {Tutorial}

| Filed Under: Children, Gift Ideas, Tutorials

My little Penelope is turning 3 tomorrow, I still can’t believe it!  We are throwing her a little Dress Up party this year meaning that all her gifts will have something to do with dressing up.  Being that she is a second child and a little sister to a big brother, she has no problem playing with trucks and trains and essentially all things boy.  But this past year she started taking ballet and we have seen that girly side of her come out more and more which is why we thought getting her some dress up stuff would be fun for her.
She loved dressing up in her leotard and tights for every class and was more than excited to participate in the ballet company’s end of year recital.  I think her most favorite part was getting to put on the make up in the baby ballet room backstage before showtime!  So a couple of weeks ago I thought I would make her some pretend make-up and gift it to her in a little pouch that she can fit in all her little pink purses.  This way she can have all the fun of ‘putting on‘ the make-up without the messy Alice Cooper looking face that doing it for reals would have.

I found a great tutorial here and then headed to the Dollar Store to pick up some cheap make-up and a few bottles of nail polish.  Once I was home I just grabbed a butter knife and used it to break up the make-up.  A quick rinse with soap and water and my containers were ready to fill with nail polish after they were thoroughly dried out.

I filled the containers pretty full and let them dry for about three days.  When you are pouring the polish in be careful to look for the little metal bead at the bottom and try not to have it fall into your make up tin.  It would just be a big ‘ol pain to have to fish out.  Also, the nail polish smell lingered for a good week or so afterward which made me glad that I actually thought far enough ahead to make this gift a few weeks before her birthday  🙂
Right after I poured the nail polish in I tapped the containers a few times to help break up any bubbles but even after doing that two of the containers ended up with bubbles dried at the surface.  It might just be the particular brand of cheap nail polish I used, and I highly doubt Penelope will even notice, but I wanted to tell you about it in case you want to pay a bit more attention to them while they are drying.  I just poured them and left, not looking at them again for two days.

The other crazy thing was how some of the polish dried.  When I filled this container above I used the WHOLE bottle of nail polish and filled it to the brim.  Two days later, it looks like the tin was just coated on the surface!  So weird…but this is actually going to be a pretend lip gloss tin so it actually works out just fine this way.
I have a pretty good feeling that Penelope is going to adore playing with these, maybe because I have already had so much fun with them…it’s great to be a girl!
XOXO,

    I love these and can’t wait until my daughter is big enough to play with them! I have also seen people use acrylic paint instead of nail polish. They mixed any color with the pearl shade to get the sparkle effect. Maybe that wouldn’t stink as much!

    What a fun idea. My little girl is fascinated with all things makeup right now, but since she is 2, I am not ready to let her even wear the kid stuff. I will have to keep this make up kit in mind for her! Thanks for sharing!!

    Just found this via Pinterest. I can’t wait to try this! My daughter loves playing with my makeup while I put it on each morning, and it is such a fun bonding time, but now she’s able to open up all the containers so I don’t want her to destroy my stuff!! (She’s 17 months.) Time for her own makeup bag and faux makeup.

    You can use the polish bottles for play nail polish. Swirl the polish around the bottle to coat the inside. Pour the polish out & let the bottle dry 2 or 3 days. Clean the brush with polish remover then wash in soap & water. When the bottle is dry just screw the brush on & your little one can play polishing her nails.
