Number and Counting Activity for Kids

| Filed Under: Children, Kids Crafts, Tutorials

As a momma to four little ones elementary age and younger, I am always trying to think of creative ways to make learning new skill sets or doing homework fun. This way not only are my kids getting practice with new skills like math or reading but we are also having playful moments and making connections with each other…it’s a win-win!
One of our favorite activities to work on math skills is using homemade number cards, a dollar store divided container, and Pepperidge Farm® Goldfish® crackers. It’s amazing what a little extra effort on my part can be to their learning process.  I buy colorful card stock and cut it to fit into the divided containers. Then I write numbers one to twenty on each card (you could always go higher!) along with a plus and a minus sign. I place two different numbers into the first two compartments with either the plus or the minus sign placed underneath. Then my kids can use Goldfish crackers to count the number on each card.Depending on if it’s an addition or subtraction problem, they either add up the total number of crackers or subtract the two numbers to find the total. They can then find the card with that number on it and place it inside the final compartment. Then they get to count the number of Goldfish crackers that match the card! Once we go over how we came to that answer they get to do their favorite part of this whole activity: eating the Goldfish crackers!!! I mean, seriously, what child wouldn’t love this math activity, smiles to be had everywhere! I love when they can be happy learning. Pepperidge Farm Goldfish Crackers wants you to be a part of their Little Moments. Big Smiles. campaign and would like to know what your Goldfish Tales are? You can read more Goldfish Tales or share your own here where you can view their latest tale, details regarding the promotion, consumer submissions (photos and stories), and a behind-the-scenes video of the making of their tale.
How do you make learning fun for your children? Tell me in the comments and you will be entered for a chance to win a $100 VISA GIft Card!

You can make learning fun by coming up with interactive learning games and offering rewards like stickers or an ice cream date as rewards for a certain amount of points they rack up each week.

We also like games to make learning fun. Trips to the park or camping give us an opportunity to work in a new atmosphere.
