Alrighty folks, so here is one of the delicious recipes we have been enjoying since my momma has been visiting us 🙂 I’m gonna be so sad when she leaves us!
So…Shoofly pie…ever heard of it? It’s a molasses-y sweet pie from Pennsylvania Amish Country (Lancaster, PA to be exact) similar in style to the pecan pie of the south but without the nuts…in other words, freakin’ yummy! It can be super sweet, like makes your teeth hurt sweet, but this recipe (from none other than Martha Stewart) is juuuust right, not too sweet and the spices are right on. Would we really expect anything less from Martha? I think not!
If you’ve never had Shoofly pie before, here is a picture of all that sweet and yummy goodness just to get you drooling:
Â
In case you were wondering why it’s called Shoofly pie, it’s cause as it would be sitting out to cool flies would be attracted to all the sweetness and the Amish ladies would have to wave their hands around it to shoo all the flies away. Cute, huh?!!
Shoofly Pie
Recipe Type: Dessert
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 8-10
Ingredients
- 1 pie crust of your choice (refrigerated, pre-made works well too!)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- salt
- 6 tbsp cold, unsalted butter cut into small cubes
- 1 cup boiling water
- 1/2 cup unsulfured molasses
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
Instructions
- Roll out pie dough into a 9 inch pie plate, crimp edges and set aside.
- Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
- In a medium bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.
- Add butter and mix well with hands until you have a nice and crumbly mixture, set aside your crumb topping.
- In another medium bowl, whisk together boiling water, molasses and corn syrup
- Add in the baking soda, beaten egg and a pinch of salt.
- Pour this mixture into your pie shell.
- Sprinkle your crumbly pie topping over the filling and bake for about 50 minutes or until the crust and crumb topping are a nice golden brown and the middle is set.
- Cool for about 30 minutes and then enjoy your sweet Pennsylvania Amish delight.
Okay, so first we mix up the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt…
Then, mix your butter into your flour mixture. Using your hands, get in there and mix that butter in so everything is nice and crumbly…set aside!
Next, grab the ingredients above (plus some salt) and mix the boiling water, molasses and corn syrup together. Once that’s all mixed up, add your baking soda, egg and salt…
It gets bubbly and grows in size a bit, so make sure you have a large enough bowl to accommodate for that!
Pour the filling into your empty pie crust, like so. Make sure to put your pie plate on a cookie sheet to catch any spill-over that might occur!!
Then, sprinkle your crumb topping on…I did not use all of mine, just a little FYI from me to you. Bake at 325 degrees for about 50 minutes or until the crumb topping and crust is golden brown and the filling is set…jiggly, not liquid-y!

Cool for about 30 minutes and you are ready to eat that baby up!

Let’s look a little closer, shall we?

This makes me laugh. I live very very close to “Amish Country” And of all amish recipes I hate shoo fly pie the most. BUT I still appreciate this post because my husband loves it so I’m going to make it for him.

I am new to your blog and I enjoy reading your posts! I recently made the fabric letters successfully thanks to your tutorial. I also LOVE shoofly pie. We lived in PA for a year and was introduced to it at a restaurant in Lancaster. Thanks for the recipe and I can’t wait to make it.
